Karnataka's traditional Tamarind Rice also known as Pulihora is ever so flavourful especially when made this way with recipe by #FamilyFoodTales. This tangy rice is often served as a prashaad at the temple or made for special occasions in the south of India but you can make it at home whenever you want! TAMARIND RICE Ingredients ¼ cup tamarind pulp 3 cups cooked rice 100 millilitres sesame oil 2 tsps mustard seeds ½ tsp asafoetida (hing) ¼ cup raw peanuts 8 dried red chillies stemmed 3 tbsps split Bengal gram (chana dal) 10-15 curry leaves ½ tsp turmeric powder Salt to taste 1 tsp chopped jaggery Oil for deep frying 4-6 appalams Fried curry leaves for garnish Method 1. Heat sesame oil in a nonstick pan. Add mustard seeds and once they start to splutter add asafoetida raw peanuts and sauté for 2-3 minutes. 2. Break red chillies and add to the pan. 3. Add Bengal gram and sauté for 2-3 minutes. 4. Add curry leaves turmeric powder and mix well. 5. Add tamarind pulp 1¼ cups water and mix well. 6. Add salt jaggery and mix well. Lower the flame and cook till the mixture is thick. 7. Take rice in a bowl. Add ½ cup prepared tamarind mixture and mix well. 8. Heat sufficient oil in a kadai. Deep fry the appalams and drain on absorbent paper. 9. Transfer the rice in a serving plate garnish with fried curry leaves and serve the with fried appalams.
