The Indian festival of Holi has its cultural significance in almost all parts and regions of the country. While the word in itself conveys quite significant meanings like ‘Putting a stop to the wasteful past’ (Ho-Li); ‘Being pure and Holy’ (Holi pronounced as ‘holy’); and ‘I have become of Him only’ (Ho-lee), it also has many mythical tales as well.
In Karnataka, it is believed that the god of love shot his arrow of lust on Shankar, who was in meditation. This angered Shankar and he cursed Kama Dev - To be burnt.
Rati, the wife of Kama Dev prayed to Shankar for mercy who softened.
Hence, this occasion for the festivities. Apart from an indicator of the change in season, the Holi also symbolizes the harmony and cordiality of relations by setting aside all differences and oppositions.
